F.A.Q.

  • To join our membership program, simply click here to sign up.

We offer both monthly and multi-month payment options, with discounted rates available for upfront payments. Your membership will take effect on the day you sign up and your billing period will begin on this date.

Upon joining, you will be sent our handbook and contract to review and sign.

Your first visit will include a new member introduction to familiarize you with the facilities and equipment.

Once these steps have been completed, you will be able to start using the studio.

  • Absolutely! A large amount of previous experience with ceramics isn’t a requirement for membership at MUD. At the beginning of your membership you’ll have a New Member Orientation session with MUD staff, to make sure that you’re comfortable working in the studio. If you’d like a little extra support, we offer 1-on-1 Private Tuition at a discounted rate for MUD members.

  • New Member Introductions are only for those who have purchased a membership. If you’d like a tour of the studio, please call or email us to schedule a time.

You can view the New Member Introduction as a brief introduction to the studio protocols - it’ll be part of your first visit to the studio once you’ve purchased your membership. As a new member of our studio, you will be introduced to our fire and health and safety procedures, as well as learn how to properly use the studio and its equipment.

Introductions are held every day except Monday at 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM, and are booked via a link included in your sign up email.

As part of your introduction we will also email you a member handbook containing all the important information you need to know as a member of our studio.

  • We welcome ceramics enthusiasts of all skill levels to join our studio.

While prior experience is beneficial, it is not a requirement for membership.

If you are new to ceramics and have not attended a class with us or at another studio before, we recommend scheduling a few hours of private tuition to ensure that you have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively use the studio and its equipment.

Once you have completed the private tuition, you will be able to use the studio independently to pursue your ceramic creations.

  • At MUD, we offer private lessons with our experienced staff members for $70 per hour for members at MUD and $100 per hour for non-members.

Beginners wishing to learn via private lessons should first sign up as members, and then contact us about private tuition or alternatively consider purchasing the Beginner’s Package on our Classes page.

A list of available tutors can be found in the studio, and members are able to contact them directly to schedule a lesson.

Please note that our staff members may only provide private lessons during their non-working hours as studio technicians/teachers, as their primary focus during working hours is to assist all studio members.

  • If there is availability, a small amount of extra hours or kiln space can be purchased at 33% of your contract rate, and $2/liter, respectively.

  • We have technicians available to answer any questions and provide guidance during your time in the studio.

However, if you wish to learn a specific technique or have more in-depth instruction, we also offer private lessons with our experienced staff members. These lessons can be arranged directly with off-duty staff at a rate of $70 per hour.

  • In general, we have found that the equipment provided is sufficient for the number of members, as people tend to use the studio at different times and not everyone is using the equipment at the same time.

However, on the rare occasion that all of our wheels are in use at the same time, we ask that you limit your use of the wheel to 3 hours to allow others a chance to use it as well.

Should this become a frequent issue, we will purchase additional wheels to meet the demand. We appreciate your flexibility and awareness of this potential issue.

  • While we provide all necessary materials for your time in the studio, we recommend that you bring your own apron and tools for your convenience.

Aprons must be cleaned after each use to prevent the inhalation of dry ceramic dust, so it is best to have your own apron that you can take home with you.

We offer basic loose tools for sale at the studio, and we have a limited number of spare aprons available for borrowing in case you forget yours.

  • As a studio member, you are able to use the studio for a maximum of 15 hours per week. These hours do not carry over from week to week, as this can destabilize the system and overcrowd the studio.

Our membership is designed for part-time potters, and the hourly limit ensures that we can accommodate all members.

While the majority of members use the studio for three to seven hours per week, there are some who may use it more frequently.

Please note that the maximum usage of 15 hours per week is not a recommendation, but rather a limit.

  • Studio memberships are not transferable and may not be shared with other individuals. Each membership is intended for the exclusive use of the registered member.

  • Our pricing structure is designed to evenly distribute costs among all members and we are not able to make individualized assessments of income in order to provide adjusted pricing. We strive to keep our prices as low as possible for all members.

  • Guest passes may be purchased for a $50 fee. Please be sure to fill out the guest waiver before bringing your guest.

  • This is due to the sequential nature of ceramics.

The process of creating a ceramic piece involves several steps, including: forming the piece, drying it, firing it, glazing it, and firing it again.

In order to fully engage in this process, we recommend committing to a membership for at least a month, as it is likely to take more than one visit to complete a piece.

Please note that memberships and classes are the only way to access the studio at this time.

  • Private workshops may be available at times when the studio is normally closed. To inquire about scheduling a private workshop, please email us at mudceramicsbellingham@gmail.com and we will be happy to discuss the details with you.

  • MUD is not designed for the production requirements of professional artists. The time and space constraints of the program (up to 15 hours per week and 30 L of glaze firing per month) are in place to ensure that we can fairly accommodate the needs of all of our members.

If you are a professional artist looking for more dedicated studio space and resources, you may want to consider alternative options that better fit your needs.

  • To ensure that you are able to meet deadlines, it's important to allow for some extra time and buffer in your schedule and production process. By budgeting six weeks and a 25% failure rate, you should be able to meet your requirements with time and pieces to spare. This will allow for some wiggle room for drying, firing, and unforeseen issues, and help to ensure that you are able to deliver on your commitments.

  • Work from MUD artists can be purchased directly from the artists themselves.

We always tag the artists in our social media posts featuring their work, so you can reach out to them through those channels. If you are unable to find the maker of a particular piece, please don't hesitate to contact us and we'll be happy to help you get in touch with them.

Additionally, pieces will be available for purchase at our regular studio sales. Keep an eye on our website or social media accounts for details on upcoming sales events.

  • Thank you for your interest in joining our team!

We occasionally have positions available for individuals with a ceramics degree or a similar amount of job experience.

If you are interested in applying for a position, please fill out the appropriate form here.

  • We do not have the capacity to rent out our kilns at this time. We are constantly firing our kilns on a daily basis, and do not have the availability to accommodate additional external use. If you are in need of kiln firing services, you may want to consider reaching out to other studios or facilities in your area that offer this type of service.

  • Tuesday to Sunday from 10am until 6pm.

  • If you have a complaint or a comment about our studio or services, please don't hesitate to contact us at mudceramicsbellingham@gmail.com.

We value your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve. Your input is important to us and helps us to provide the best possible experience for our students and members. We appreciate you taking the time to reach out and share your thoughts with us.

  • Ceramic artists must plan for some amount of work to encounter problems. This can be due to a variety of factors such as the poorly reclaimed clay, trapped moisture, or improperly applied glaze.

While we do our best to manage all of the predictable and controllable studio processes to prevent damage to your work, there will always be some element of unpredictability in ceramics. We recommend allowing for a 25% failure rate to account for these types of issues.

In cases where a member has been negligent in their making process and it has caused damage to our equipment (e.g. leaving plaster in the clay that burst in the kiln, or applying glaze too thickly and causing it to drip), we may charge a breakage fee to cover the cost of replacing damaged parts.

Similarly, if we have been negligent in our handling or firing of a piece, we may offer a small refund as a gesture of goodwill. However, we cannot take responsibility for breakages that occur when handling particularly delicate pieces. It is the maker's responsibility to discuss the handling of these types of pieces with the manager and to supervise loading them into the kiln directly.

In cases where a kiln malfunction was outside of our control, we also cannot be held responsible for any resulting damage.

  • It is possible to suspend your membership.
You can learn more about doing so in the Handbook.

  • We understand that unforeseen events can arise. You can read about canceling your membership in the Handbook.

  • Unfortunately we aren’t able to sell gift cards for memberships - this is due to the fact that our memberships are first come, first serve and we only have a limited number available.

You are able to purchase a class at MUD as a gift for someone else! Please see our Student FAQ for more details.
