Classes at MUD

Welcome to MUD! Our classes are open to people of all skill levels, from beginners to those with more experience. Our dedicated teachers are all accomplished ceramicists who sell their work throughout Washington and globally.

We offer a range of classes for students aged 18 and over (16 & 17 with parental permission), including general classes that cover both hand-building and wheel throwing techniques. In addition, we offer specialized throwing classes and occasional project-based classes such as tile making. Our general courses are held weekly over 12 weeks. We look forward to helping you explore and develop your passion for ceramics at MUD.

Our classes guide students through each step of the ceramic creation process. Students will learn hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab building, and/or how to use the wheel to create various shapes. The clay is then left to dry until it becomes "leather hard," at which point students can add their decorative touches. When the piece is fully dry, it is fired in the kiln to a temperature of around 1945°F. The resulting "bisque" fired piece can then be glazed and fired again at an even higher temperature.

Please note that there is a materials fee of $3/pound for firing work made in class. In the interest of the environment, we encourage students to only fire pieces that they intend to keep, as firing is an irreversible process and fired clay that is not used can end up in landfill. However, unfired clay can be recycled.
